More Field Data In PageSpeed Insight Now Than Ever | June 2021 W4

By winwei on June 25, 2021

News flash – it’s Friday again!

This week, let’s learn about:

  • More Field Data In PageSpeed Insight Now Than Ever
  • Google third-party cookies blocking has been delayed to 2023

24/6/2021 – More Field Data In PageSpeed Insight Now Than Ever

How important is Google's PageSpeed Insights for your Website?
Source

Following the latest update, Google announced that PageSpeed Insights will now publish all available field data even if some of the data is missing.

Field Data’s the data that is collected from real users downloading actual pages on mobile devices under real circumstances.

Previously Google would only report if all the data that has been collected met a specific threshold of data.

This was problematic because 30% of web pages don’t record one of the metrics, First Input Delay (FID).

FID measures the responsiveness of a web after an action is taken. E.g., how long does it take to be directed to the next page after you click “sign in”.

This update will allow more publishers to make better decisions on what needs to be fixed in relation to PageSpeed metrics.

24/6/2021 – Google third-party cookies blocking has been delayed to 2023

And That's How the Google Cookie Crumbles
Source

Well-known browsers like Safari and Firefox have already implemented some blocking agents against third-party tracking cookies, but Google has shared that it is delaying its plans to phase out third-party cookies in the Chrome browser until 2023.

The reason was that they need to work more closely with regulators in the UK to come up with new techs to replace third-party cookies for use in advertising.

The have further shared some information about the expectation for each stage: “Stage 1 (Starting late-2022): Once testing is complete and APIs are launched in Chrome, we will announce the start of stage 1. During stage 1, publishers and the advertising industry will have time to migrate their services. We expect this stage to last for nine months, and we will monitor adoption and feedback carefully before moving to stage 2.

Stage 2 (Starting mid-2023): Chrome will phase out support for third-party cookies over a three month period finishing in late 2023.”

Google said they will be sharing more detailed information in the future on this.

That’s about it folks. Let’s meet again next week!
